HEAVY VEHICLE SIMULATOR SET TO GO

Four Finnish and Swedish road organisations recently made a joint purchase of a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) from South Africa. They have agreed that the HVS should be used in both countries, a year at a time, for the accelerated testing of road structures. The research partnership aims mainly to improve road management, based on knowledge of structures and road maintenance measures, by evaluating how various materials and structures deteriorate under the influence of traffic. It will also survey the life cycles of various types of maintenance and improvement measures, develop cooperation between road research programmes, increase skills in road research, and attract new researchers to the road sector. The research programmes of the four collaborating organisations are reviewed briefly, in relation to their intended use of the HVS. Their joint research programme will give priority to: (1) clarification of relations between results obtained with the HVS and in field experiments on roads; (2) development of deterioration relations; (3) validation of laboratory methods for analysing materials in road structures; (4) evaluation of common Finnish and Swedish road structures; (5) evaluation of structures using alternative materials; and (6) evaluation of methods for improvements and maintenance.
