THE COMPACTION EFFECT OF PAVER FINISHERS

Discussions have gone on for over a decade regarding the feasibility of compacting the asphalt carpet with the paver finisher to such an extent that rolling is unnecessary. A research project at Karlsruhe University has shown that some screed constructions on modern pavers can compact the asphalt to 98-100% of laboratory compaction. Hydraulic extensions are examined. Although these are very useful in rationalising road construction, they do not all provide the same compaction effect as the basic screed, and the level of the extension in relation to the basic screed must be adjusted in order to produce satisfactory compaction. A formula is given for the calculation of the requisite adjustment. /TRRL/
