BALLAST'S PART: ITS KEY ROLES AND QUALITIES
The substructure of most track has three distinct components: ballast, subballast and subgrade. Each of these plays an important role in providing a stable support for the track superstructure: the rails, fasteners and ties. Understanding ballast requires knowing how it fits into the total substructure system. This is the first in a continuing series of RT&S articles that will review ballast topics. The focus of this first installment will cover functions of ballast compared to those of other substructure components; properties of ballast and their relationship to its functions; and ballast fouling.
