TECHNOLOGY--MARINE RADAR-RELIABILITY AND SIMPLICITY MUST WIN THE DAY

A British study has shown that simplicity of utilization is an essential factor in the selection of radar equipment since many officers are not capable of using sophisticated systems. A poll of ships' masters has shown that display reliability is the characteristic most in demand. This feature is considered vital due to the faster turnarounds, longer voyages, and less time in drydock which all reduce time allowable for repair. Radar is divided into three cost groups. The least expensive group provides true motion displays of all targets and a relative motion marker system. An intermediate price group uses small tape recorder devices which present "historical" pictures on demand. It is feared that the intermediate group is too sophisticated for use by ships' officers. The most expensive group uses full fledged computers to work out course change problems.
