TRANSPORT CANADA HEAVY FREIGHT VEHICLE STUDY
In March of 1991 Transport Canada's collision investigation branch launched a six month field study of heavy freight vehicle collisions in eastern Ontario. Sixteen heavy freight vehicle collisions were investigated. This paper focuses solely on the performance and the safety issues related to the tractor trailer units. Paticular emphasis is given to the cases which led to the proposal for a new Canadian motor vehicle safety standard, CMVSS 905 trailer load security and its relation to truck stability. Existing standards: CMVSS 108 conspicuity, CMVSS 111 mirrors, CMVSS 121 air brakes, CMVSS 208 seat belts, and CMVSS 301 fuel systems, are noted. The paper also provides some insight into the level of skill, training, time, and tools required to perform on-scene investigations of heavy freight vehicle collisions. (A)
