A TRIP-AND-FALL HAZARD: PARKING LOT WHEEL STOPS
The literature typically has listed the following five wheelstop problems: trip-and-fall hazards, constricting traffic flow, trapping blowing debris, interfering with snow-plowing in northern climates, and maintenance. There are several reasons why wheelstops create special trip-and-fall problems. If PCC types are used on a PCC surface, the colors blend. Painting the wheelstops yellow will help identify the hazard from a distance but will not totally prevent falls. Tripping often occurs when only a small section of the block extends out beyond the edge of a car, which can shade the object by day as well as from parking facility lights at night. Yellow is the most helpful block marking color when used on a newly surfaced or sealed asphalt lot.
