ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE WITHIN THE SPEED RANGE 30-50 KM/H

MAETNING AV FORDONSBULLER I TAETORTSTRAFIK: HASTIGHETSOMRAADET 30-50 KM/H

The Nordic prediction method for road traffic noise uses the same noise level for all speeds equal to or less than 50 km/h. To expand this method to the speed range 30-50 km/h the Nordic noise group decided to make measurements in all the Nordic countries. Measurements have been made in Norway and Denmark in 1993. To complete the project additional measurements have been made in Sweden and Finland in 1994. This report contains the results from Sweden. Measurements have been made at 8 places in the south west of Sweden. The speed limit was either maximum 30 km/h or recommended to 30 km/h. At each measurement place about 150 vehicles have been measured, about 90% of which were light vehicles. The measured average sound level at 10 m distance varies between 60 and 67 dB for the light vehicles and between 70 and 75 dB for the heavy vehicles. The average vehicle speed for the different measurement places varied between 33 and 45 km/h. For a single by pass the speed varied between 20 and 70 km/h. Factors which may influence the sound level are: (1) the ground between the vehicle and the microphone (for example grass); (2) road surface; and (3) air temperature. The air temperature effects the sound level with +0,1 dB/degree Celsius. The normal variation in sound pressure level between different by-passes for light vehicles with the same speed and with a regular driving style is about 6 dB. But the variation can, for single cases, be up to 15 dB. The noise level increases, as a function of speed, is 30 for speeds over 50 km/h according to the Nordic prediction method. The result of this project indicates that the speed dependence is smaller below 50 km/h.
