SOME APPLICATIONS OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO HULL STRUCTURE DESIGN

The application of the finite element method to the design of hull structures is becoming popular. So it is necessary for the many people concerned to understand the practical aspects of this method. In this paper the following items are investigated. All of these items are concerned with actual ship designs. 1. Hold web frame shape of chip carrier. 2. Shearing stress distribution of floor plate. 3. Local buckling strength of web plate due to concentrated load. 4. Transverse strength of tanker--stress response to various loading conditions--what is the severest loading condition and how to check the strength easily at the initial design stage. Calculations are carried out with the ZPLATE-computer program an automatic mesh dividing finite element method calculation program, developed by our company.
