LARGE-SCALE GROUNDING EXPERIMENTS AND NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS
Structural failure of a tanker due to grounding has been studied in large-scale experiments and numerical simulations. The simulations used a commercial FEM code with customized subroutines accounting for rigid-body motions, plate rupturing, and welded joint failure. The simulations agree well with experiments showing that the approach is suitable to assess the crashworthiness of new structural designs for tankers.
