GREY AREAS IN TANKER OPERATIONS
One of the intentions of the International Maritime Organization MARPOL Convention is to avoid operational pollution and to achieve that it is most important the rate and the quantity of oil being pumped out is known. Tankers are therefore provided with oil content monitors to facilitate such assessment. The purpose and scope of this paper is to highlight certain grey areas in the understanding of MARPOL and operation of an oil discharge monitoring and control system.
