THE THREE-POINT SAFETY BELT TURNS 40
1998 marks the 40th anniversary of the implementation of the most effective vehicle-safety device on the market: the three-point safety belt. This article presents an interview with Nils Bohlin, the engineer who invented the belt for Volvo in Sweden. Bohlin reviews how he came up with the idea for the three-point belt, explains why the device is so effective, and contemplates public reaction to the belt and its profound impact on vehicle safety.
