CONTROLLING THE MAINTENANCE COSTS OF ROLLING STOCK

This article, authored by four writers, examines the control of bus maintenance costs over the bus's entire operating life. The first part highlights the mounting complexity of rolling stock and operating constraints as well as the training needed to ensure that the new vehicles are properly maintained. The second portion examines the ways in which to project the foreseeable utilization costs of material for purchase. Next section describes the information that is necessary to determine the best quality-price ratio and to optimize the basic guarantees that are required. In the face of difficulties with forecasting the overall cost of maintenance throughout the life cycles of any vehicle to be purchased, the author suggests consideration of lease/management packages. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of integral or specialist maintenance subcontracting are revealed.
