A BRIDGE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Continual improvements in the bridge construction art of cable spinning, a process born in the 1800s and developed during the 20th century, culminated in the construction of the Great Belt East Bridge in Denmark, the world's longest air-spun suspension bridge and the longest to be constructed offshore. The project drew extensively from developments made throughout the century. The most important improvement in cable spinning is the recent development of the controlled tension wire adjustment method. Using this method, builders set cable spinning records, completing the project 7 weeks ahead of schedule. The new developments in the specialized work of suspension bridge cable construction are making air-spun construction cost-competitive for the more moderate span ranges. A sidebar highlights Blair Birdsall, one of the preeminent bridge builders of the 20th century.
