Maintenance of bicycle facilities is a subject that is not usually considered during the planning stages of a project. It is only after the facility has been in operation that certain maintenance problems become evident which could have been avoided by proper planning and design. Problems associated with maintenance include raked leaves, drifted sand, debris, accumulated water, overhanging branches etc. No one maintenace program will suit all facilities. It should be determined which maintenance program is appropriate. The general concept in the development of this program should be "what work is needed to keep the bicycle facility in an usable and safe form". /TRRL/
