TEST LOADING OF PILES AND NEW PROOF TESTING PROCEDURE-DISCUSSION

It is noted that the author's comments on methods of interpreting load tests for failure loads and the proposed new load testing procedure and acceptance criterion are clearly relevant to medium diameter (30 cm - 60 cm) driven piles. The advantages of referring to settlement lie in the definitiveness and clearness of the criterion, and in the possibility of fixing settlement values keeping in mind the type of structure and its tolerance to total differential settlement. It is noted that due to the large design load, it is very difficult in practice to perform proof testing to 250 percent of the intended allowable load. The difficulty can be overcome by limiting the load test to 50 percent of the allowable load and extrapolating load-settlement curves by means of a hyperbolic function. If the limit load is defined as the load corresponding to an ultimate settlement, the extrapolation over a relatively short range seems to be reliable.
