With fuel economy being a prime consideration these days in vehicle design, the trucking industry has become acutely aware of the importance of lightweight materials. The GMC General is the current model that features the latest technology. The surface finish has no exposed rivets or fasteners. The electrical system is geared for better serviceability. Several aerodynamic drag reduction devices, which are constantly being researched and tested are described. In order to produce more miles per gallon, engines are re-rated, and turbocharging is employed. Thermostatic fans are used in conjunction with this. Truck braking systems are being altered by the new technology also. Disc brakes and hydraulic brakes will probably be standard in the future. Radial ply tires are gaining wider acceptance after having demonstrated fuel savings. The trailer industry is also experimenting with all these fuel saving techniques. Lightweight materials have long been around, but new ones always appear, such as fiberglass reinforced plywood construction. The technology explosion is so great for both the tractor and trailer industries that material a few months old is already dated. The key to staying on top is keeping up with the latest advances.
