HIGH-TECH ROAD TO THE FUTURE
The 40th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System presents a wonderful opportunity to look at how far we have come and how far we have to go in highway transportation. The advent of electronics technology is having an impact on highway design, construction and maintenance. Building new highways has become more difficult than ever. They are expensive to build and maintain; they create environmental concerns about air quality and land use; there are growing concerns about safety issues. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) offer solutions now and for the future. ITS is simply the application to surface transportation of communications, electronic and computer technologies. ITS will provide increased safety, improved mobility, reduced congestion, environmental protection, energy conservation and job creation. ITS will carry the legacy of the Interstate system into the 21st century.
