STOP NOW OR THE CAR GETS IT

This article looks at the variety of ways in which law enforcement can end high-speed pursuits. In Los Angeles alone, there are an estimated 1,000 high-speed chases by police every month. Methods for stopping maniac drivers differ from place to place. American police favor the roadblock, while in Britain, the police prefer the spiked strip. The hollow spikes are supposed to puncture tires without causing a massive blowout, which would throw the car out of control. And in Finland this summer (1996), the police unveiled a large harpoon attached to the front of a police car, which is used to ram a fleeing car and drag it to a halt.
