The general approach is summarized that is used to teach the basic concepts, interpretation, and application of shear strength data. The applicability of shear test data to field stability problems rests on the principle that similitude exists between the shear test model, the analtyical model and the field prototype. Testing and analytical methods must be directed towards ensuring such similitude and to assessing the effects of any lack of similitude which may arise. The article discusses the nature of shear strength with particular reference to the direct and indirect measurements and the drained and undrained measurements of shear strength. Considerations of similitude, short term and long term stability, shear test data applicable to the loading condition, and shear test data applicable to the unloading condition are covered in a discussion of the applicability of shear test data to field stability problems. Coverage of the factors affecting the evaluation field stability includes shear test similitude, and analytical similitude.
