EVALUATION OF METHODS OF IDENTIFYING PHASES OF CEMENT PASTE

The utility (strengths and weaknesses) was examined of 3 methods (X-ray diffraction differential thermal analysis, and infrared spectroscopy) of analysis of hardened cement paste. Tests were performed on 37 samples in 11 laboratories in 3 countries. The seven hydrates considered were: Ettringite, tetracalcium aluminate monsulfuate-12- hydrate, tetracalcium aluminate carbonate-11-hydrate, tetracalcium aluminate hemicarbonate-12-hydrate, tetracalcium aluminate hydrate, alite hydrated for about 5.4 years at 70 F, and belite similarly hydrated. Details are outlined of the 30 partially hydrated cement pastes (prepared with 3 portland cements using varying water to cement (w/c) ratios and curing times) and the preparation of the cement paste samples.
