CONDITION MONITORING ON BOARD SHIPS--PART II: ADVANCED CONDITION MONITORING SYSTEM BASED ON MICROPROCESSOR COMPONENTS

Systems for condition monitoring usually involve large numbers of parameters and data. Some form of automatic signal processing and data reduction is usually necessary to present the data in useful form. The microprocessor is a fairly new electronic element which may be the heart of very small computer configurations, usually called microcomputers. The complexity of such computers is far less than that of minicomputers, and systems containing microcomputers may therefore be easier to use, more simple to develop, less costly to buy and more reliable in e.g. engine room environments than similar systems using minicomputers. This paper discusses several aspects of microprocessor based condition monitoring instruments with special reference to units for Condition Monitoring of diesel engines and steam power plants on board ships.
