A STUDY ON SKID RESISTANCE AND SURFACE TEXTURE OF EXPRESSWAYS IN JAPAN

Macrotexture on some types of asphalt mixture was researched by laser profilometer. It was found that there is correlation between macrotexture and 2.36m sieve pass in the gradation. The macrotexture of drainage asphalt pavements is particularly large because not only surface texture but also air void are measured at the same time; therefore, the evaluation of texture should be distinguished from other dense-graded pavement. Correlation between macrotexture and skid resistance was observed to some extent. Dozens of profiles were also measured and analyzed in detail. In the case of profiles with large macrotexture, the amplitude of profile that is related directly to the tire-pavement contact is distributed over a wide range and the amplitude of profiles with small macrotexture is distributed over a narrow range. It was found that this different nature of profiles is closely related to the difference in skid resistance. An index was calculated based on the distribution of amplitude. The index has high correlation with skid resistance coefficient at high speed and seems to be a parameter for the evaluation of the surface characteristics of pavements.
