THE AUTOMATED PLANNING AND SEQUENCING OF CONTAINERS FOR CONTAINERSHIP LOADING AND UNLOADING

A set of computer programs, designed to aid the cargo loading supervisor and terminal personnel in performing pre-stow planning and generation of sequential loading and unloading instructions, is currently being evaluated by a West Coast shipping line. The programs operate in an interactive (conversational) environment making them operable by shipping lines and terminal personnel without computer training. They have been adapted to, and made available on, a worldwide timesharing computer network, accessible from ports in the Continental U.S. and the many maritime nations. The integration of the load sequencing programs with the flow of containers and information in the marine terminal is described.
