IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL OF THE SHIP STEERING PROCESS

The overall results concerning a large number of identification experiments for determining a suitable mathematical model of the ship steering dynamics are presented. Such experiments have been performed during the last two years on board the oceanographic vessel Bannock of the Italian National Council of Research. The data recorded at sea, by the on board computer have been analyzed according to different identification techniques, testing different mathematical models. The results are satisfactory. The results provided an accurate and consistent description of the ship dynamics at different operation conditions. Based on the identified models a number of computer controlled ship steering experiments have been performed, the main features of which are presented.
