This paper develops the algorithms needed for optimal updating of position of vessels which are navigated by dead-reckoning (DR) systems. The equations used by the DR computer to calculate the position of the vessel are linearized to obtain the linear error propagation model. In the linearization process only the most significant error sources are considered. Several updating methods are treated. They include landmark, celestial, radio and satellite updates. A Kalman Filter algorithm which takes into account the particular updating method is formulated. This algorithm yields the post-measurement optimal error estimate which is used to demonstrate the effect of the optimal updating for various types of measurements is presented.
