Infrastructure finance came of age in the 19th century with the construction of railroads in Europe, the U.S. and, later, Latin America. This year, several transportation projects that have been in the works for several years achieved important milestones on the way to completion. Six of those projects are rail, from high-speed rail links in Italy and Germany to two projects designed to relieve the infamous congestion of Bangkok. Greece's new airport finally emerged from political wrangling to enter the contract stage as well. This article offers a snapshot of seven of these projects, which account for a combined $50 billion infusion into the global transportation sector.
