A team of researchers, contractors and manufacturers is turning to satellites and computers to increase the speed and quality of asphalt pavement installation, and ultimately automate the process. After demonstrating a semi-automated, roller guidance system last month that proved effective on two paving projects, researchers assert that it could save 5.7% in overall hourly costs. But the nearly $90,000 price tag for the electronics may keep it from becoming more widely used.
