DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE ANALYTICAL OVERLAY DESIGN METHOD
An analytical approach to the design of new highway pavements has been adopted in a number of countries. This approach is inherently capable of assessing the structural parameters, in particular the elastic modulus of the existing pavement, on the basis of the measured deflection parameters, pavement thickness, and subgrade modulus. This paper discusses the application of computer programs BACKCALC and DOVERLAY to designing overlay thickness requirements of flexible pavements, for which an existing pavement can be modelled as a one-, two-, or three-layered system. A manual design approach is also presented as an alternative to the computerized method. A case study on verification of the fatigue and the permanent deformation models against actual pavement performance and traffic data observed from a toll freeway in Indonesia is also included.
