INVESTIGATING THE PREMATURE FAILURE IN NEWLY OVERLAID ROADS
This paper describes an investigation into slippage failure in recently overlaid pavements in Northern Ireland. The investigation included field deflection measurements, laboratory testing, and theoretical modelling of the slipped sections. A number of sound and failed "debonded" cores were extracted from these slipped road layers for visual examination and laboratory stiffness measurement. A full-scale rehabilitation trial section was carried out on the slipped road by tack coating the surface layer before applying a well-compacted overlay. The behaviour of the trial section was studied by measuring their deflections using both the Deflectograph and the Falling Weight Deflectometer.
