COMPARISON OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC FEM ANALYSES IN CONNECTION WITH BACKCALCULATION OF PAVEMENT LAYER MODULI BASED ON FWD DEFLECTION DATA

Many backcalculation programs that calculate pavement layer moduli have been developed for several years. Most of them incorporate a convergence technique employing a combination of closed form and numerical solutions based on static elastic layer analysis. However, the actual load generated by the falling mass of the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) is a dynamic one. Thus, dynamic effects on pavement response should be taken into consideration in the backanalysis of FWD data. Dynamic finite element method (FEM) analysis is compared with static one, taking into account the inertia effects of pavement materials. Several accelerometers were bonded at the pavement surface and the mass of the FWD equipment was dropped. The changes in acceleration and deformation at each measured point and the change in dynamic wave form of weight were carefully measured. Static FEM and dynamic FEM analysis using various damping constants were carried out, comparing the calculated peak deflection basins with the measured one.
