BEARING CAPACITY OF HYDRATED GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINERS. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE
Two discussions of a technical note with the aforementioned title by Koerner and Narejo, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 1, January 1995), are presented. In the first discussion, Najjar and Basheer question the use of sand as cover above the geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and state that unaccounted for extra loads generated by the sand could pose more problems related to stability and settlement of the landfill liner. The discussers recommend geofoam blocks as a solution to the anticipated problem of placing sand cover on liner slopes. Basheer and Najjar also suggest studying the effect of piston size and shape on the behavior of the various GCLs tested. In the second discussion, DeBattista and Fox replicate the authors' tests and comment on the results in light of the additional data. Discussions are followed by closure from the authors.
