NEGATIVE SKIN FRICTION ON PILES IN LAYERED SOIL DEPOSITS. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE
Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Wong and Teh, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 6, June 1995), are presented. Maugeri and Castelli discuss similar work they conducted in 1993. The discussers agree with the authors that the validity of the numerical results obtained by the proposed method comes from an accurate evaluation of the soil parameters. Maugeri and Castelli also state that the influence on the results due to different soil models is less than the influence due to different evaluation of model parameters. Discusser Motta also cites his work with Castelli (1993) and agrees with the authors that a simplified load transfer procedure is capable of predicting the downdrag on single piles. Motta also suggests a simple closed-form solution when field conditions conform to those corresponding to the simplified assumptions. He checks the validity of the simple model by comparing results from two of the authors' case studies. Discussions are followed by closure from the authors.
