RECONSIDERATION OF INITIATION OF LIQUEFACTION IN SANDY SOILS. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Fear and McRoberts, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 3, March 1995), are presented. In the first discussion, Obermeier suspects that the wide range between the bounds of liquefaction and nonliquefaction behavior is the result of misidentification of the source bed, not site and soil factors suggested by the authors. In the second discussion, Liao clarifies much of his work performed on this subject, which was cited by the authors. Discusser Liao agrees with the authors that more statistical studies would be worthwhile. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
