MODELS OF SPATIAL EXTERNALITIES AND NETWORKS

The spatial dimension of negative externalities is discussed in a framework of interactions between infrastructure networks, economic structure and transport. An overview is given of network characteristics and related model types, which focus on the relationship between networks, commodity flows and externalities. Among these, multiregional and spatial price equilibrium models receive attention. A number of general modelling formulations is proposed to represent externalities in such models. The paper concludes by noting critical policy issues in the context of network analysis that should receive attention when applying models such as discussed here. (A)
