DEVELOPMENT OF A SIDE AIRBAG SYSTEM TAKING REAL WORLD ACCIDENT ANALYSIS INTO ACCOUNT

When looking at the publications which have been appearing more and more frequently in recent months on the topic of side airbags, it is noticeable that there are significant differences in the basic principles of the designs. For one thing, different installation sites, such as door, seat, headrest or car roof are chosen. There also appear to be significant differences of opinion as to what parts of the body must be protected. Whereas several years ago the first publications showed side airbags that were intended to protect the region from the pelvis to the head, today one mainly finds systems that directly protect only the chest area or the head. In this presentation, the results of BMW accident analysis will first be discussed, leading to an airbag strategy with the goal of comprehensive passenger protection in side impacts.
