SAFETY OF BUSES AND COACHES - PROBLEMS AND RECENT SOLUTIONS

The paper reviews CIC's experience concerning safety, development and Type Approval of buses and coaches in the fields of rollover, seat design and safety belts (all likely to be coverd by the new EEC Directives). It summarises the rollover safety issues, particularly as regards the role of calculation in the development and Type Approval. Then it outlines the main findings of the investigation into the effectiveness of lap belts and finally argues, by the results of a separate research/development project, that a 'universal' coach safety seat with 3-point belts and protecting rear occupants is possible both technically and commercially.
