TRANSPORT, LAND-USE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. CHAPTER 15: MODELLING THE IMPLICATIONS OF NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY: AN APPROACH USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The author considers the need for new public transport systems and compares provision in the UK with that of other European countries and the US. The choice of an appropriate urban transport system by means of modelling is then discussed. Conventional modelling is considered to have several disadvantages and the use of artificial intelligence or expert systems is suggested. Such a project called UTOPIA (Urban Transport Planning and Operations using Intelligent Analysis) being carried out at the Centre for Transport Studies, Universty College, London is described. The implications in terms of transport, land use and the environment are considered. For the covering abstract see IRRD 883195.
