TRANSPORT, LAND-USE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. CHAPTER 7: SUSTAIN - A MODEL INVESTIGATING SUSTAINABLE URBAN STRUCTURE AND INTERACTION NETWORKS

The authors consider the modelling of urban land use and transport systems and some of the methods already in use. The SUSTAIN model is then described which acts as a compact interactive preliminary evaluation tool to provide insight and approximate quantitative comparisons of alternative land use and transport policies directed at urban sustainability. Elements of the model are outlined including a) urban form, b) geometrical shape, c) housing distribution, d) distribution of employment, e) transport networks, f) vehicle types, g) job choice, h) mode choice and i) public transport. The operation of the model is described and some results discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 883195.
