CALCULATION OF THE PERMANENT DEFORMATION IN A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

An apparatus calculation of permanent deformation in a flexible pavement is conducted using a non-linear finite element program "CEPVP", developed by the authors. The asphalt layer is considered to be an elastic, plastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic material with the relevant parameters determined from uniaxial creep and creep recovery experiments. The granular and subgrade layers are assumed to be elasto-viscoplastic media. Maximum irrecoverable deflections are calculated for loading regimes in which temperature and the numbers of load applications are variables. Relationships between permanent deformation and numbers of load cycles for given temperature, loading and loading time are established mathematically. Finally it is found that the plastic properties of asphalt mixture are the important factor in calculating the permanent deformation of flexible pavements, particularly at the upper end of the temperature spectrum.
