A 100% increase in barge capacity when carrying cars, palletised or crated cargo is now possible with the "Extradeck", a portable second deck for barges. The Extradeck (for which patent application has been made) has been designed for easy installation and removal, its use requiring no previous preparation or welding of fittings to the barge structure. Turn-round time is therefore only minimally affected when fitting or dismantling of the decks is required. The inital requirement for these Extradecks has arisen on LASH barges, which already have been used for shipping smaller foreign cars into the U.S.A. The Extradeck is relatively light in weight and is capable of being rapidly assembled or dismantled. When not in use, the component parts can be stowed compactly either on board the barge or ashore. A prototype model of the Extradeck has been sponsored by the U.S. Maritime Administration for trials to be carried out by Prudential Lines and other U.S.-flag LASH operators.
