The Ocean Servant I is the first of two semisubmersible "tow-lift" pontoons being built in Japan. The vessels are capable of delivering heavy equipment -- up to 12,500 tons -- anywhere in the world. The Ocean Servant has a length of 354 feet 5 inches, a breadth of 98 feet 6 inches and a depth of 24 feet 8 inches. The deck area is approximately 32,300 square feet and is designed for a load of 1.4 tons per square foot. The units can be loaded by either roll-on/roll-off methods or float-on/float-off methods including some interesting variations which increase the capabilities of the vessels. The operation of the vessel is simple. There are buoyancy chambers above the main deck forward, one port and one starboard, and most of the hull below the main deck is used for water ballast. The hull can be submerged horizontally by flooding so that loads with a maximum draft of 15 feet can be floated onto the vessel. Objects having a greater draft, up to about 32 feet, can be loaded by grounding the fore part of the vessel -- bow completely submerged and the forefoot resting on the bottom -- in about 65 feet of water. The submerging and resurfacing is remotely controlled from the wheelhouse-accommodation module at the stern of the pontoon. Roll-on/roll-off operations can be done over the bow ramp, which has a width of 72 feet, as well as over the side, which has a clear length of 229 feet. The ramp can withstand loads up to 2,500 tons. Together with heavy deck tackles, loads up to 8,000 means of ro/ro methods using platform cars, crawlers, rail buggies, etc., as well as by the slide-on-slide-off method. The Ocean Servant can load ro/ro cargo either from piers or from the beach. The fully controlled ballasting system assures safety during ro/ro procedures.
