FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OPTIMISATION OF A LARGE BRIDGE BASED ON DYNAMIC TESTING

This paper describes the optimisation of a finite element model of the Dala bridge in Switzerland, a slender 3 span continuous steel/concrete composite structure crossing a deep and exposed valley. Three test methods are described: a) shaker testing with servo hydraulic cylinders, b) impact testing using rockets to excite the low frequency fundamental modes and c) ambient vibration testing to identify responses to traffic, wind and tremors. The second part of the paper presents the finite element model of the Dala bridge and discusses the optimisation of this model based on the experimentally identified dynamic characteristics.
