EVALUATION OF ALUMINIUM BRIDGE SYSTEMS

Following a brief outline of the manufacturing and economical benefits of aluminium bridges a record of types used in different fields of application; stretching from pedestrian bridges to bridges over highways and canals, road and even railroad bridges; as well as an evaluation of typical structural elements and characteristic properties such as aluminium alloys, strength values, joining methods, weights, etc, is presented. The material is included in the 'Aluminium Bridges Data Bank' of the authors' institute. Specially formed extruded structural elements are also presented and examples of their use in practice and in the rehabilitation of bridge decks are given. The paper also presents a comparison of the design analysis of a composite aluminium bridge (concrete deck on aluminium beams) according to different specifications. Extruded aluminium hollow sections as special deck panels used in bridge rehabilitation are also mentioned. A state-of-the-art of design codes for aluminium constructions, existing national or international recommendations and features of the Eurocode 9 currently being drafted, concludes the paper.
