THE MEASUREMENT OF STRENGTH, STIFFNESS AND IN SITU STRESS IN THE THANET BEDS USING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

The paper describes a site investigation of the Thanet Beds, a dense fine Tertiary sand, underlying Central London. The paper presents an interpretation of the data on the strength, stiffness and in situ stress in the Thanet Beds. In addition to conventional site investigation and laboratory tests, good quality samples were obtained using rotary coring techniques. Measurements of the stiffness at low strains were made in triaxial apparatus using Hall Effect Gauges. In situ tests using the Weak Rock Self Boring Pressuremeter were carried out and the results interpreted to corroborate the stiffness and strength data, and enable an approximate evaluation of the in situ stress in the deposit.
