MENARD PRESSUREMETER TEST TO FOUNDATION DESIGN - AN INTEGRATED CONCEPT

From 1958, Louis Menard strove to formalise his new prebored pressuremeter test and concomitant foundation design method. This combined test-and-design approach, officially sanctioned by the French Ministry of Planning, Housing and Transport and more recently by the AFNOR Standards Association, has culminated in an integrated design approach through refinements developed by Menard's disciples: SPAD test data logger, PRESSIO data reduction program deriving the usual Menard pressuremeter parameters, and ISPRESS foundation design program. Regarding pressuremeter test operation, the recent AFNOR Standard NF P94-110 (1991) is very similar to ASTM D4719-87, both following the early Menard test specification. Regarding data reduction, the PRESSIO software is now in standard use with French state-run and approved bodies. Foundation design codes based on the Menard approach are embodied in the standard specification for government contracts and have been officially adopted in the French building industry's DTU's, to be incorporated in a series of AFNOR Standards.
