NEGATIVE PORE PRESSURES - SEASONAL VARIATION AND IMPORTANCE IN SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS

Experience of the unsaturated zone in general, and its negative pore pressure in particular, is limited in Sweden. Therefore, slope stability analyses in areas with substantial sand and silt deposits are difficult. This paper presents measurements of negative pore pressures, carried out in parts of Sweden with deep sand and silt sediment. The measurements show fairly constant negative pore pressures and only a slight seasonal variation is noticed at one of the test sites. Finally, when negative pore pressures are taken into account in stability analyses, the factors of safety for the often very steep slopes are in general in agreement with existing geometry and observed sliding activity.
