MOVEMENTS OF LARGE RETAINING WALLS DUE TO SWELLING OF STEEL PLANT SLAG

Swelling of steel plant slag backfill was identified as the primary cause of the inward movements of the massive walls of a scale pit at a major integrated steelworks in South Africa. The paper documents more than 4 years of observations and describes the chemical analyses that were undertaken to identify the type of slag used as backfill.
