INADEQUATE PERFORMANCE OF LIGHT CONSTRUCTIONS DUE TO EXPANSIVE SOILS: CASE RECORDS FROM GREECE

In this paper several case histories from different regions of Greece are presented, concerning structural damages caused by swelling soils, Distinctions are made between buildings as well as embankments constructed with swelling soils. Five typical projects are used as examples. In every one of the above mentioned cases, the mechanism of swelling process in the soil was actually determined by evaluating field and laboratory data, which further on allowed for some correlations to be made and remedial measures to be designed.
