THE ROLE OF STRESS ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF UNSATURATED SOILS

Several workers have now developed soil mechanics and physics techniques suitable for the coupled stress-strain-water flow behaviour in unsaturated soils with saturated soils being a special case. One such approach used by the authors has been described in another paper to this conference. Such approaches can be used to predict the transient behaviour of soils more generally and soils occur. This paper describes how stress and suction have been incorporated into models for the transient mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of such soils and why in some applications it is necessary to use analytical techniques, which fully couple the load deformation and water flow processes.
