A COMPREHENSIVE CONCEPT FOR NON-SATURATED GRANULAR BODIES

Non-saturated fine-grained soils are treated as ternary mixtures. The pore water causes a capillary granulate pressure depending on void ratio and degree of saturation. The grain skeleton is modelled as hypoplastic with only four material constants. The combination of hypoplasticity and capillarity explains the response of humid soil elements in the oedometer, under triaxial compression, and simple shearing, with different void ratios and changing water content. Rather conventional strength relations are obtained with capillary granulate pressure. Relations are derived for slopes, retaining structures etc in limit states. Deformations due to surcharge or excavations are calculated with a hypoplastic FEM with capillarity. Two field tests support this approach. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 881647.
